Kartli

Kartli - the orchard of the country spangled with historical monuments - has always been the center of Georgia. It is the largest and the most important region, which gave the country its name -“Sakartvelo”.
Both the ancient and the new capitals of Georgia - Mtskheta and Tbilisi - are located in Kartli.
Historically the area is divided into Lower and Inner Kartli. 
Southwest of Tbilisi, beneath the ruins of the medieval town of Dmanisi, 1.8 million-year-old remains of the first Europeans were found. In Bolnisi, at the Bolnisi Sioni, the 5th century Georgian lapidary inscriptions have been preserved.
Uplistsikhe - a town cut in sandstone rock - was first inhabited in prehistoric times and was also an important trade center on the historic Silk Road well until the 12th century. 

Mtskheta is the historic capital of Georgia where one can see a multitude of highlights. The Jvari Monastery and Svetiskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta at the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari Rivers are declared UNSECO World's Cultural Heritage sites.
