Kakheti, the heart of the wine region, has a rich history and is home to hundreds of historical and architectural monuments. Among these are the splendid Alaverdi Cathedral (11th c.), the Shuamta Monastery (7th c.), the Gremi Church (16th c.), and the medieval academy in Ikalto (12th c.), which was to become a leading center of enlightenment and scholarship in feudal Georgia. It was here that Shota Rustaveli, the famous Georgian poet, received his education.
Telavi is the center of Kakheti. The city is spread out over the foothills and along the wooded slopes of the Gombori Range. At one time, after the devastation of Gremi by Persians, Telavi became the capital of Kakheti.
